Clean Cycle uses Optimized Rankine Technology™ to scale down proven ORC waste heat power generation for smaller scale deployments.
The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) has generated reliable power for decades in large-scale, very large footprint applications all over the world. But most heat wasting applications are found in smaller scales like ordinary reciprocating engines and boilers seen every day.
The Clean Cycle™ waste heat power generator is a new kind of ORC system that’s optimized specifically for the vast majority of small-scale heat-wasting applications.
How it works
Clean Cycle captures heat in an evaporator that boils the working fluid, producing vapor. The vapor expands, spinning the turbine which drives a generator and produces electricity. The vapor is cooled back to a liquid and pumped back to the evaporator to repeat the process.
This ORC has been deployed thousands of times in a wide range of large-scale applications and large-footprint plants. GE has taken the same principle and optimized it for smaller scales.

The critical innovations
The M-Series module™
Our integrated power module combines a high-speed turbine expander (26,500 rpm) with a high-efficiency alternator in one sealed unit.
Because it’s integrated, there is only one moving part with no external seals and no gearbox required.
Magnetic bearings
Super-efficient magnetic bearings with self-learning centering capabilities have no metal-on-metal friction, so there’s no need for oil systems and their expensive maintenance demands.

Power Conditioning
Instead of gearboxes and mechanical step-down techniques that cause parasitic losses and operating problems, the Clean Cycle uses sophisticated power electronics to turn the high frequency output into utility grade power. It’s smarter, simpler and more reliable.
Power factor is 1, so there’s no need for expensive capacitors.
Safe Working Fluid
Most ORC working fluids are hazardous. We use a safe HFC that is ideal for this solution and has no environmental impact.
These and other innovations are combined with world-class systems expertise to create the industry’s first waste heat power generation optimized to work with lower temperature sources in small-scale applications.
Biomass waste heat power generation
Biomass energy efficiency is a new weapon for operators looking to cut costs or even boost revenues.
Biomass boilers are becoming an increasingly important energy generation source. Clean Cycle takes the excess heat that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and turns it into electricity you can use or sell.
