 Eco Link Resources LTD has installed 2, 2MW steam generating woodchip boilers at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester.
The installation, a turnkey project, included extending the old incinerator room to accommodate the new plant, installation of a weighbridge (to monitor woodchip deliveries), new biomass boilers, associated woodchip storage/handling equipment and new flues.
The boilers installed are Uniconfort Global/G-180, shipped from Italy in sections and craned into position through the existing boiler house roof. Fuel for boilers is virgin grade woodchip which is delivered to site in a Legras moving floor trailer, which is docked on the weighbridge in front of the off load hopper, and is externally to eliminate the risk of the fuel running out. From the offload hopper the material is lifted by a bucket elevator and delivered to independent storage silos, which feed each boiler via an auger.
The biomass boilers have been installed alongside the existing gas fired plant at the hospital and have been configured so that they are the lead boilers. A new steam main header from the biomass plant has been installed to connect into the hospitals existing ring main with production/demand of steam, required for the site, being controlled via Spirax Sarco surplussing valves.
Additional features installed on the boilers include automatic air cleaning, gas burners to pre-warm the boilers and ignite the woodchip and a fully comprehensive BMS control system that allows remote adjustment to the running of the plant.
Wythenshawe hospital have claimed its stake as Britain’s greenest hospital by being the first to install a 4MW Biomass boiler, which has the capability of reducing CO² emissions by 3,400 tonnes each year, having a massive impact on the amount CO² produced.
